It was in the 1980s that BMW made an attempt on the small compact roadster market with the famous BMW Z1 . Unfortunately, this model is proving to be too technological and expensive to make it a real success. The insolent success of the Mazda MX-5 encourages the Bavarian manufacturer to reinvest the segment with the Z3 from October 1995. This model will also aim to compete with the Mercedes SLK and others Porsche Boxster .

This model will be produced in the United States, and this is a big first with the construction of a brand new factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It is a BMW E36 platform with the undercarriages of the compact model.

Great commercial success for the Z3 which was produced from 1995 to 2002 by undergoing a facelift mid-term. This roadster will be manufactured in the USA which is its main market. The 4-cylinder 1.8l 115hp and 1.9l 118hp are sufficient for the ride. The 6 cylinders provide more sensations with a 2.0l of 150hp, a 2.2l of 170hp, a 2.8l of 192ch as well as a 3.0l of 231hp. The ultimate version exists with the Z3M equipped with the 3.2l of the M3 E36 also developing 321hp.

We will observe two types of bodywork. The phase 1 4 cylinders have a "narrow" body, while the 6 cylinders have a "wide" body. When the restyled version was launched in 1999, the “wide” bodywork was adopted on all versions.
