Produced between 1964 and 1967, the BMW 1300/1700 GT convertible is a model that is both elegant and sporty, occupying a special place in the history of the German marque. The history of the BMW 1300/1700 GT convertible begins with the Glas 1300 GT and 1700 GT, two models designed by the German manufacturer Glas. In 1966, BMW acquires Glas and incorporates these two convertibles into its range, before offering a 1600 GT version. The designer Pietro Frua is responsible for the bodywork of the Glas 1300/1700 GT. This body encountered some problems, notably due to the transport of the bodies from Italy, where they were manufactured, to Germany, where final assembly took place. The sheets being raw, some shipments suffered, depending on the weather conditions, from rust problems. The 1300/1700 GT convertible is positioned as an intermediate model in the BMW range, between the 1600 sedan and the 2000 CS and 3000 CS coupés. It occupies the segment of medium-sized convertibles, facing competitors such as the Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 and the Triumph TR4.
